Harris County Jails’ 3-hour Service Routine:
Volunteers get to jail at 10:30am and get to the assigned floor around 11am. It takes an hour to roundup all inmates on the floor. We have a list of Muslims and ones not listed as Muslim but have attended service or asked to be put on the list.
Inmates and volunteers arrive in Chapel by 12pm. We have an hour circle with simple rules: one person at a time, don’t put a religion down including Muslim sects, no politics and no taking: If you have side conversation, you must move to a different spot or you will be asked to move. If you talk again, you will go back to your pod. We haven’t had to send anyone for years.
1pm 20-25 Khutba basically Quran and Sunnah. We have inmates give khutba frequently but not the ones who want to deliver it. We get to know them first and request them to give the next khutba.
Our Reentry services are limited to self-reflection opportunities and referring them to corresponding mentors, mail courses with Link Outside and Tayba Foundation. Many of the older brothers can do a much better job talking than anyone who has not been incarcerated. Salaam refers returning citizens to Peer Mentor groups set up to support in DFW, Houston and an old client in Austin area, a Bosnian sister.
Salaam focus for now is to bring all out talents on a platform, get our communities to talk to one another on equal footings and appreciation, hold events in Masajid to recruit, some of us can organize the details of volunteer visits and get them trained, like Sr. Naida says as substitute teacher inshAllah.
